If emerging technologies are to help solve rather than amplify our problems, sustainability has to be built-in. The non-profit research and advocacy organisation AlgorithmWatch proposes a framework for AI that brings together interdependent elements — economic, social and environmental — and sets the terms for measuring sustainability for AI. In conditions where companies often prioritise profit, governments are guided by economic growth and citizens are rarely engaged, SustAIn asks, who will set the terms for people and the planet and what will they be?
